My trap is not catching anything

Open it and read the message under the bait slot:

• Not underwater: the block above the trap must be water too.
• Add bait: the item in the slot is not bait. Hover over an item to check. Bait has a "Fish Trap Bait" line.

Also make sure the output grid is not full. Extra catches drop above the trap, which is easy to miss in deep water.

Does a trap work when nobody is nearby?

Traps work while their chunk is loaded, like furnaces.

Why did I catch an old boot with a Nautilus Lure?

High luck makes junk rarer, and it disappears once its effective weight reaches zero. Tables added by other datapacks may use different weights. Check the odds in Catches or in JEI.

Can I use a trap in lava, or in other fluids?

No, traps need water. A datapack cannot change that.

Does it work with other mods' fish?

A datapack can add any item to a catch table. Other mods' fish that are tagged #minecraft:fishes also work in Fish Chum.
